The Last Place on Earth
“The Last Place on Earth” follows five fearless activists over eight years as they battle to protect Sumatra’s Leuser Ecosystem – the last place on Earth where tigers, elephants, rhinos, and orangutans coexist in the wild. Shot by a largely indigenous crew, this investigative documentary exposes the devastating impact of the $70 billion illegal palm oil industry, which produces an ingredient found in over half of the world’s packaged products.
At the heart of the story are Farwiza, who reveals the spiritual majesty of this 2.6-million-hectare rainforest; Ulet, an international photojournalist tracking the palm oil supply chain; Rudi, commander of 400 forest rangers; Dr. Ian Singleton, who rehabilitates orangutans orphaned by human encroachment; and Panut, leader of an undercover team investigating the $20 billion illegal wildlife trade.
As these remarkable activists secure legal victories against criminal plantation owners, arrest poachers, release rehabilitated animals, and restore thousands of hectares of forest, their success in Leuser becomes a beacon of hope for conservation movements worldwide. Their story demonstrates how grassroots activism can triumph over seemingly insurmountable challenges.
