Bittersweet is a dynamic youth video project featuring four short documentaries about world chocolate production in Tacoma's sister cities. Four short videos produced by youth filmmakers explore the creativity and culture behind chocolate and the challenges tied to labor, environmental impact and ethical sourcing. They examine the beauty and the challenges behind one of the world's most beloved foods. Carlos Ortiz trained and supervised young filmmakers who were selected to participate in the project.

Through festival coverage, historical storytelling and community perspectives, the short films examine sweet dimensions of chocolate--including culture, creativity, craftsmanship and celebration--the bitter realities associated with its production such as labor exploitation, environmental degradation, inequities in global trade, and the ongoing challenges of ethical sourcing.

Produced as part of 2026 Chocolate Festival sponsored by Tacoma Sister Cities and Zeta Maya Entertainment, youth were empowered to use media to spark awareness, justice and cultural understanding. Audiences are encouraged to think critically about where chocolate comes from and how consumers can support a fairer future. At Tacoma's World Chocolate Day celebration on July 7, 2026, the audience will choose a favorite out of four selections.
